Does initial purchase include some degree of update support, or must I purchase the update subscription at the outset to get updates during the first year (or whatever period)?

Each product purchase includes 12 months of updates and technical support. After that period, you need a subscription plan to continue receiving them. You may continue using the product after your subscription expires, but you will not receive further updates until you purchase a new subscription plan.
